TV3 60 Minutes - A True Brainwave

TV3 60 Minutes hosted by Mike McRoberts aired a news story called A True Brainwave about deep brain stimulation surgery performed on patients with movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s and ET. The patient is anaesthetized but kept conscious (‘awake’) during surgery in order for the surgeon to ask the patient questions that help pinpoint exact areas of the brain where the tremors originate. An electrical device is then implanted that ‘short-circuits’ the faulty nerve impulses that cause the tremor. For some, this type of surgery has been successful in the treatment of Tourette's, Parkinson’s, and ET.
